7 Signs Your Phone Screen Needs Replacing

Not every screen problem means a replacement — some are software glitches. But a genuinely failing display gives clear signals. Here are the seven most common signs your phone screen is broken and needs replacing, how to tell real damage from a temporary fault, and roughly what each costs to fix in Bangalore.

1. Cracks — even hairline ones

An obvious spider-web crack is easy to spot, but even a thin hairline crack matters. Cracks let dust and moisture reach the digitizer underneath, which is why a "small" crack often turns into dead touch zones or lines weeks later. If the crack is spreading or the glass is lifting, replace it before it fails completely.

2. Lines across the display

Vertical or horizontal coloured lines almost always mean the display panel or its ribbon connector is damaged — usually after a drop or pressure on the screen. Lines rarely fix themselves and tend to grow. This is a hardware fault: the display needs replacing.

3. Black spots or ink-like blotches

A dark, spreading blotch (often after a drop or sitting on the phone) is a damaged OLED/AMOLED layer — sometimes called "screen bleed." It only grows over time and cannot be repaired with software. Replacement is the only fix.

4. Touch not responding (or "ghost touch")

If parts of the screen ignore your taps, or the phone taps and types by itself ("ghost touch"), the digitizer — the touch layer — is failing. First rule out software: restart the phone and remove any screen protector. If it persists, the touch layer needs replacing.

5. Flickering or fluctuating brightness

A screen that flickers, strobes, or randomly changes brightness can be a loose display connector or a failing panel. Check first that auto-brightness and any battery-saver "adaptive" settings are off. If it still flickers, it's a hardware issue.

6. Dead pixels or discoloured patches

Permanent dots that stay black, white, or a fixed colour are dead or stuck pixels. A few may be tolerable, but clusters — or patches of wrong colour — indicate panel damage that spreads. Replacement restores a clean display.

7. Backlight gone — display dark but phone works

If the phone rings, vibrates and you can hear notifications but the screen stays black, the display or its backlight has failed while the phone itself is fine. This is a classic post-drop symptom and is fixed by replacing the screen assembly.

Damage vs software glitch — a quick test

Before assuming the worst: restart the phone, remove the screen protector and case, and check display settings. Software glitches usually clear after a restart or update; physical damage does not. If the problem survives a restart and started after a drop or spill, it's almost certainly the screen.
